Make Up Policy: Make-ups are only scheduled if a class is canceled by the Studio due to weather, instructor illness or other issues.
We understand that emergencies and other unforeseen circumstances can arise for students throughout the session. Please notify your instructor and the front desk (email [email protected]) as soon as possible if you will be missing a class. You may request to do a make-up during open studio time once per session. You MUST receive approval to do this! Make-ups are not guaranteed.
Mondays with Mireille
(Soft Pastels and/or Oil Painting*)
Instructor Mireille Duchesne
Learn from one of our greatest local art masters using either soft pastels or oil paint. In Oil painting, Mireille will teach how to compose, mix paint, soften edges, and paint in layers. She uses the technique of Chiaroscuro and the technique of wet-on-wet. Additionally, you have the option to work with Soft Pastels- a beautiful and tactile medium. You will learn how to blend and render texture, how to compose a painting, and how to use light and dark to apply layers on layers of paint to obtain a luxurious, incredibly colorful painting. Each student can work on their own subject matter and will receive individual instruction tailored to their own experience. This class is for all levels, from beginner to advanced students
Students are to provide their own supplies and paper: soft pastels (no oil pastels), *oil or water-based paint.

Art 101
Instructor: Whittnie Daniels
Art 101 provides an introduction and foundation to approaching art for the beginner. We will cover 5 major components to art-making with composition, perspective, value, color-mixing and art history. This class will be fun, filled with demos, individual instruction, exercises and inspiration for each students’ artistic journey- perfect for anyone who has ever wanted to explore art but perhaps been intimated by the process.
In this class, we will cover the basics of linear perspective, value, tone & shading in drawing. Then we will explore color-mixing, the color wheel and how to alter a color’s hue, value, warmth & coolness, and how they interact with surrounding colors. Composition is a powerful tool in art-making and we will explore the many avenues to composing a picture. This course will also review the importance of art history, and how the tools you are being taught are connected.

Beginning Painting/Mixed Media
Instructor Sarah Miller Totten
In this painting class, students will be guided through various steps and techniques to build a painting. Paintings will be completed in few sittings allowing students to explore the advantages of this approach. This direct way of painting encourages artists to be decisive about their painting and to be spontaneous. As an additional option, students are welcome to work in a mixed-media approach, as they learn how to build their artistic experience.

Drawing

This class will focus on the fundamentals of how to create a beautiful drawing using pencil and/or charcoal. Students will learn how to accurately draw objects from still life and then bring them to life using proper scale, perspective, and shading. Class will also experiment with portraiture from photos or a mirror for self-portrait exploration. This class is for those wanting a basic introduction to drawing technique, which can truly help the artist evolve their unique style all in a relaxed and fun atmosphere!

Fundamentals of Drawing
Instructor Maria Kaprielian
Good draftsmanship is the key to realistic drawings and if you can’t draw well, your paintings won’t look right! In this class for the beginner and intermediate artist we’ll cover the basic skills needed to create a finished drawing or the underlying sketch for a realistic painting. Instruction will emphasize light and shadow, contour mapping, tonal value, perspective and scale. Compositional elements such as focal point and editing will also be addressed, all in a relaxing, collegial atmosphere.

Watercolor Portraits
Instructor Aki Kano
Discover the art of capturing the essence and unique beauty of people and animals. Learn the fundamental techniques and principles of watercolor painting specifically tailored for portraiture. Through a series of structured lessons and hands-on demos, you will gain understanding of composition, light and shadow, as well as proportion, and the nuances of capturing facial features.
The curriculum will first focus on fundamentals as we will review the best materials to use as well as foundational exercises to develop brush control, color mixing, and tonal values. Then we will transition to exploring the intricacies of portraiture, studying how to mix flesh tones, render fur, and add fine details to the face. Aki will demonstrate the step-by-step process of portraiture, from composing the initial sketch to building layers of pigment, delicately blending colors, and painting the details.

There are many approaches to painting. The fundamentals or “elements” of art are a collection of foundational groundwork to take from in order to create the right approach for you. Various painting approaches and techniques will be covered in this all-levels class and each student will be individually instructed. This is the perfect class for anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of painting to the more experienced painter who needs guidance and the expertise of the teacher.

Stained Glass
Instructor: Phoebe Katzin
This seven-week class will focus on the copper foil method of stained glass. Students will learn how to cut glass and, using a grinder, assemble a design. Once the glass is cut and ground to fit, you will learn how to apply copper foil around the edges. Finally, students will learn how to solder and use a zinc came to finish the edges and add hanging rings and patina their pieces.
This class requires your own tools. The Studio has limited communal-sets of some tools that you can borrow during the class. Please see materials list for more info.

Basket Weaving
Instructor: Kim Carver
A 7-week basket-weaving class. You will learn basic weaving techniques to make 3 baskets over the course of this class. Students will be able to choose their colors from an array of dyed reeds. All baskets will receive a stained finish!
#1 – Kitchen Basket is an open flat weave base that will weave into a beautiful rectangular basket.
#2 – Tray Basket begins with an 8×11 wooden base and includes leather handles.
#3 – Small Market Basket will introduce how to weave with a D-Handle.

Art Room Open Studio
September 15th – December 8th (Closed Friday November 24th)
Join us each Friday to work on your art in a communal space, with other local artists. There may or may not be an instructor present: this time is intended for you to work freely! Bring your supplies & work in the art room space from 2:30pm – 5:30pm.

Private Art Lessons
