Fundamentals of Drawing– Wednesdays
Instructor Maria Kaprielian
The basics for this drawing class include a 2B pencil, a manual sharpener, a pad of 9 x 12 inch paper and an eraser. Good, sturdy paper (80 lb.) and a selection of quality pencils, varying in hardness from 4H to 6B, makes drafting even more satisfying and are recommended. Additional materials should include a kneaded eraser, hard white eraser and a metal ruler.

Watercolor Portraits– Thursdays
Please note that these are *suggested* materials, specific to Aki’s class. Students with more experience are welcome to incorporate their own materials.
PAPER: The singularly most important element. I recommend Arches paper, in block or sheet formats:
- Blocks: 140pd. Cold-Pressed paper, in 9×12”, 10×14”, 12×16” size or any size you prefer
- Sheets: 300pd Cold-Pressed sheets, in 22×30” size. These sheets can be divided into 2 or 4 smaller sheets, and the 300pd weight makes stretching on a small scale unnecessary.
PAINTS: I recommend a limited palette of nine Winsor & Newton professional grade colors:
- 5 Warm Colors: Winsor Red and Winsor Yellow; Burnt Sienna and Raw Sienna; and Permanent Rose
- 5 Cool Colors: Winsor Blue Green Shade and Winsor Blue Red Shade**; Hookers Green; and Paynes Grey, Winsor Violet
You can find 5ml individual tubes in each color here: https://www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-newton-professional-watercolor-tubes/
The Winsor colors are staining and transparent, which makes for excellent washes and glazing.
MASKING:
The best, by far is Nichiban Tape for borders (recommended width is 24 mm). Available online at this link: https://merriartist.com/collections/vendors?q=Nichiban
Pebeo Masking Pen
PENCILS:
I recommend Mars-Staedtler Mechanical Pencils and Rotary Sharpeners with 3H, 2H and 6H Faber Castel leads, although traditional pencils and sharpeners are fine if you prefer.
PALETTE and MIXING PANS:
Best, but more expensive, is the white ceramic rectangular palette and small round mixing pans called ‘China Nest’.
Plastic equivalents are OK but very light and so less stable, especially outdoors.
BRUSHES:
Please do not spend a fortune on brushes; you do not need Winsor & Newton Series 7!
Winsor & Newton also has a great and inexpensive line, Artists Watercolor Brushes. Or choose a brand you like. Utrecht, Blick, and Jerry’s Artarama carry many lines.
I recommend brushes that have a mix of synthetic and sable tips.
1” Flat; #4, #6, #10 Rounds
OTHER:
Kneaded Eraser; 2 small water holders or cups; Viva Paper Towels or small rag/towel; 12” ruler or 9 or 10” Triangle.
Most of the supplies may be purchased at Jerry’s Artarama, Blick, or can be purchased online at other art stores or Amazon.
Beginner & Advanced Watercolors– Thursdays
Instructor Maria Kaprielian
Most of the materials below are available on the Amazon wish list: http://a.co/3CAMWrQ
Other recommended websites for art materials (just click or copy and paste into browser):
A word about quality: Professional (Artist) grade watercolor materials are more expensive and easier to use than student grade materials because they provide consistent results. The colors are more intense and the paper is more durable. That being said, you have to decide what fits your budget.
Paints – in tubes not pans. Professional (Artist) grade paint is better – Daniel Smith makes a really good professional beginner pack with 2 reds, 2 yellows and 2 blues (see Amazon wish list). If you already have some paints, make sure you have at least a warm and cool yellow, warm and cool red, and warm and cool blue color to start.
Watercolor palette with deep wells and large mixing areas (see Amazon wish list).
Paper-cold-pressed and at least 140lb (300gsm). 100% cotton is best but more expensive: Arches, Fabiano or Strathmore are popular brands. Canson and Strathmore also make a less expensive watercolor paper that is about 70% cotton – it is less durable with repeated washes but can be a good paper to start with. I suggest having some of each kind of paper.
Brushes – synthetic or natural hair. Make sure the brushes have a nice sharp edge or point when wet.
3/4 inch flat brush
#6 and #12 round brush
#4 rigger brush
Drawing paper for thumbnail sketches and small studies
#2 pencil and eraser.
At least 2 containers to hold water (take-out soup containers work well)
Masking or artists tape
Paper towels or facial tissues (Kleenex) for blotting
Masking fluid (frisket) and rubber cement pick-up
Small spray bottle for water
Hair dryer (the Studio also provides some hair dryers)
