Watercolor (Thursday Beginner & Advanced)
Materials List:
It is important to have materials you feel comfortable working with and fit within your budget. Professional materials can be a big investment, but higher quality materials will make a huge difference in the final outcome of your paintings. The suggested list below is a good starting point so you can decide what works best for you!
Paints: Tube paints are best.
- I recommend Winsor & Newton Cotman paints! Cotman is the student grade Winsor & Newton, but it has a very similar feel and color consistency to their professional grade paints.
- If you are a more experienced painter, you may be interested in trying Winsor & Newton professional grade paints.
- If you have another brand you prefer, that’s fine too! I would recommend you have at least the following:
- cadmium yellow hue or lemon yellow
- yellow ochre
- cadmium red hue or any warm/bright red
- alizarin crimson
- ultramarine blue and cobalt or cerulean
- burnt sienna
- burnt umber and/or sepia
- purple or violet (like dioxazine purple)
- permanent rose
- black (Ivory or lamp).
Paper: Everyone has different paper preferences and I encourage students to try a range of papers to find the one that fits their way of working.
- Cold-pressed paper that is at least 140lb (300gsm)
- It is best to use a 100% cotton paper
- Popular brands include: Arches, Fluid, Strathmore and Stonehenge. When buying cold-press paper, be aware of the tooth (the texture) of the paper. A rough paper will make achieving detail difficult.
- I recommend a watercolor block, where the paper is sealed on two or three sides to prevent buckling.
Brushes: Brushes are a personal choice, but I suggest having a variety of sizes (natural or synthetic)
- four rounds (#1, #3, #7 and #10)
- A larger, soft filbert brush for washes
- #2 rigger/liner brush.
Other Materials: Sketch paper, #2 pencil and eraser, water container(s), paper towels, Watercolor palette with wells and large mixing area, preferably one you can close.
