Approved Outside Glazes
All non-railyard glazes (Amaco, Mayco, etc) MUST be approved by staff for student use at the studio!
We’re happy to approve glazes that are rated for Cone 5–7 firings! We base approvals on how stable a glaze is at the temperatures our kilns reach. All decisions are made using test results from our own kiln firings.
If you’d like to get a new glaze approved, reach out to us at (914) 617-8541 or [email protected]!
These glazes have been approved by a Railyard staff member for use on bisque pieces!
Some glazes are marked as *Inside Only*! These glazes ONLY be used on the inside of or on flat pieces.
To prevent damage to both your artwork and our kiln shelves, DO NOT apply these glazes to the outside of your pieces.
Glaze should NEVER be applied to the bottom surface of pieces that touches the kiln shelf!
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and effective firing process!

We’re happy to approve glazes that are rated for Cone 5–7 firings! We base approvals on how stable a glaze is at the temperatures our kilns reach—typically Cone 5–6 and Cone 6–7. In our experience, commercial glazes tend to react more reliably at Cone 5–6. All approvals are based on test results from our own kiln firings.
For students, we approve glazes from reputable commercial manufacturers such as Amaco, Mayco, and Spectrum. If you plan to combine multiple glazes, we recommend testing the combination on a small piece or test tile first to minimize the risk of damage to your work and our kiln shelves. Shelves that are damaged beyond repair are subject to a $75 fine.
To get a glaze approved or if you have any questions, feel free to contact us at (914) 617-8541 or [email protected]! When submitting a glaze for approval, please include the name of the glaze, the product line or category, color, and the cone firing range listed by the manufacturer!
Studio members are welcome to use any glazes they choose, as we require our members to have extensive ceramics experience and a strong understanding of glaze reactions.
