About the Class
Instructor: Jill Leary
Create the pieces that bring a table to life with Railyard Arts Owner & Founder, Jill Leary; one thoughtfully made form at a time.
In this hands-on, two session mini-series, students will learn how to design and build individual, functional ceramic pieces that come together to form a cohesive table setting. Each class focuses on teaching the skills and techniques needed to create one featured form, giving you the foundation to repeat and refine that piece on your own studio time. Take either part or both (you do NOT need to take Part 1 to take Part 2)!
Part 1: The Basics (April 7th-28th): The first four-week session explores the essentials: a plate, a bowl, a mug or cup with saucer, and a serving platter. Students will make one of each during class, learning construction methods, proportion, and design principles that can be applied to creating multiples outside of class if they choose to build a full set.
Part 2: Beyond the Basics (May 5th-26th, please note that this is the Spring 2 session): The second four-week session moves into statement and hosting pieces: a cake stand, napkin rings, a pitcher or vase, and a charcuterie board. These projects encourage creative problem-solving and personal style, while continuing to develop consistency and craftsmanship.
Throughout the workshop, students receive guided demonstrations, individual feedback, and plenty of studio insight in a supportive, relaxed environment. You’ll leave with a curated collection of handmade pieces—and the skills to expand that collection into a complete table setting at your own pace.
Perfect for: Potters who want to strengthen their functional skills, develop a cohesive body of work, and enjoy a creative, confidence-building studio experience where design meets everyday use. This is a great class for wheel throwers looking to try handbuilding!
Materials: Please bring your usual clay tools to class! Some communal tools will be available for use!
Students taking this class must be enrolled in another Spring clay class at Railyard Arts! Please note that this class does not include open studio time or firing fees!
