“To see, we must forget the name of the thing we are looking at.” – Claude Monet
Combining mindfulness and art, this class is designed to sharpen your focus and improve your ability to see. Our brains do a lot for us – including helping us move through the world more quickly by “connecting dots” and drawing conclusions. As artists (and people) it is often helpful to peel away our assumptions, so that we can actually see what is in front of us – rather than what we think we see. As Monet said, “To see, we must forget the name of the thing we are looking at.” This class introduces a variety of mindful drawing exercises, including bilateral drawing, the Zen art of Enso, contour drawing, time-lapse drawing, and the Tibetan art of Miksang. In addition, you will be invited to practice several simple, yet powerful, somatic tools that empower artists (and all people) to connect to their senses and better observe the present moment. These mindfulness practices include a 7 (yes, seven) senses meditation, breathwork, and mindful eating. (Fairtrade chocolate, herbal tea, and clementines will all be offered for the mindful eating practice. Please note any allergies upon registration). Throughout the workshop, there will be plenty of time for conversation and community. This workshop is appropriate for new and experienced artists, as well as for new and experienced meditators. You can expect to leave this workshop relaxed, refreshed, and with a reinvigorated ability to be present to the world around you.
