Add a touch of creativity to your garden by making a mosaic planter, bird-bath, house number, decorative stone or other garden object.

You will have a choice of various tiles and glass that are appropriate for outdoor use, and learn the proper adhesives and grout so your mosaic can be used outdoors year round. The freeze-thaw cycle of our New England climate requires certain types of base materials and tile to exist outdoors, and this class will teach you what you need to know in order make an out- door mosaic that will last.

Your instructor, professional mosaic artist, Cathleen Newsham will teach you about design, tile cutting, adhesives, grouting and finishing your work for a professional look. Cathleen will consult with you via email or phone prior to the class to discuss your base object. The class fee will cover: tiles, adhesives, grout, cleaning supplies

There will be an additional cost for materials. Please plan to pay the instructor on the first day of class: $40
Additionally, please visit the “Materials” Tab for other suggested materials you will need.

Photo descriptions:
Bird house: Wooden base objects such as birdhouses need to be sealed with marine varnish prior to tiling and grouting

Bird bath/Frog: Concrete or high-fire ceramic base objects can be used in outdoor settings if the proper adhesives and grouts are used.  Ceramic and glass tiles, as well as high-fire pottery make excellent mosaic materials.

Mosaics Materials

There will be an additional cost for materials. Please plan to pay the instructor on the first day of class:
$40

Additionally students will need:

Wheeled Nippers – you can purchase at Home Depot or on their website. https://www.homedepot.com/p/ QEP-7-25-in-Glass-Tile-Nipper-for-Glass-and-Mosaic- Tile-up-to-1-4-in-Thick-32010/311173784 (There will be a few available for the class, but the instructor encourages you to purchase your own.)

Safety Glasses – Available at Home Depot or any hardware store. (There will be a few available for the class, but the instructor encourages you to purchase your own for health and safety reasons. If you wear prescription glasses, you can wear them instead of the safety glass- es)

A base object – Each student will bring their own base object, but must discuss your choices with your instructor prior to the class. Terracotta is NOT an appropriate base to use in our climate, so your instructor will contact you prior to class by phone or email to help you choose the right base.

Additional Materials (optional) – Your instructor will supply all the tiles you will need, but if you’d like to add your own high-fire pottery and dishes from home it will add a personal touch to your project. You can also bring other solid objects such as old jewelry, toys, shells, buttons, keys or other ephemera you would like to use in your work. Not sure it will be able to withstand outdoor use? Bring it anyway and Cathleen will help you determine if it can be used in your project.
